Shopping
From what everyone tells me, I need to get used to mail order. Not only that, I have to plan way ahead because it takes about a month for anything to reach us. During Christmas, I need to even think more ahead due to bad weather. Apparently, people celebrated Christmas two weeks late because the mail plane could not make it to the island last year. Good to know. I also am supposed to stock up on favorite food items once we get into our house, just in case our food shipment does not make it due to bad weather. Also good to know.
Food shopping here should not be a problem, once I can find out where the organic farm is on the island. I know there is one...I just don't know how to get there. Driving is VERY confusing. The streets all have names...however there is no street signs to tell you if you are on the correct street or not. The island is small, but still it is going to take time to learn how to get places. We have spent a few hours literally going in circles trying to find the right street or building. The streets are very tiny too, and parking is hard at times. The worry of getting lost has makes me a little timid about venturing out alone with Robynn. Plus, there is the handicap that I can't read the language. So here we sit on base, until weekends when Charles can go with us. While learning to navigate a foreign country with a toddler, I find it's nice to have two drivers in the car. One person driving, while the other can look at the map, decipher a language, figure out where to go, and tend to the toddlers needs/ questions. Also, we only have one car right now, and Charles needs it during the work week. He has to drive all over the base right now in processing. I couldn't leave the base right now even if I had the nerve.
The base store is very small. None of the veggies are organic, and none of the meat. This weekend I hope to go to one of the grocery stores off base. Sure, I won't be able to read anything, but maybe they will have a nice meat counter.
I have not found a place to get arts and crafts yet. The base has a craft store, but it is so small. I'm hoping I can find a place out in town somewhere as well.
On base they actually have some of our lotions, shampoos and conditioners that I usually get at a health food store, so that is great.
I am really looking forward to when we get our house, and know where to shop. It will be nice and much less stressful once we can have a routine again.
I'm starting to feel a little claustrophobic having to stay on base all day every day. I'm used to having wheels and going places. There are lots of things we can do, parks, pools, shops etc. on base, so that is good. However, it will be nice once I know my way around, and we buy another car.
Robynn made a joke today. She told me she needed to catch a fly and get some butter. Then she could make a butterfly!
